FC Cincinnati joined Major League Soccer with a great deal of excitement in 2019. First Financial Bank immediately signed on as their Financial Services sponsor and offered both an affinity debit and credit card. At launch, there was a strong surge of customers. However, demand quickly plateaued as the card was strictly seen as an affinity card for “super fans” with not a lot of value for the casual fan.
Instead of focusing on super fan benefits like merchandising discounts, which you only use rarely, we pivoted to the everyday and every game benefits—such as tiered shopping rewards and a free drink at every home match. As a hometown bank in Cincy, we also pulled in match day and city traditions into the campaign to strengthen the connection between the bank, the club, and the fans.
